Transport for London (TfL) has appointed WW+P Architects to provide design services for four new Underground stations as part of the proposed Bakerloo Line Extension.

The work consists of a feasibility study for new stations at Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate, Lewisham. The line extension, which is subject to planning and funding approval, could be operational by 2040.

The Bakerloo Line was built in 1906 and currently terminates at Elephant & Castle.

In a statement on LinkedIn, Steve Bell, WW+P regional director – Europe, said the design work would provide “tangible transport connectivity to a traditionally under-served part of London”.

“This is an historic opportunity to support growth in one of London’s most ambitious Opportunity Areas, delivering the new homes and jobs this government continues to highlight the demand for. The extension of the Bakerloo Line brings greater connectivity to the area and provides opportunity to enhance it further through new town centres that include community hubs, workspaces and homes,” he said.

WW+P will work with Aecom on the project.

In 2022, TfL appointed Dr Sauer & Partners and Arup to undertake feasibility studies for five packages of rail tunnelling works, and another for cross-passages.

An extension to the Bakerloo Line was mooted in 2014. The current upgrade to Elephant & Castle Station, which includes a new station box and passenger tunnels, has been designed to support the proposed extension to Lewisham. In September, TfL appointed Dragados UK to design and build the new passenger tunnels.
